Cloudy Waters
A low tide walk with Dr Sindia Sosdian
Saturday 16th April at 12:30pm + 1:30pm
The walk will run for 45 minutes and we’ll meet at Watch House Bay, Barry. We're hosting the same walk twice, to accommodate a smaller group size.
Join Dr Sindia Sosdian for a guided walk exploring Barry’s hyper-tidal coastline, and the possibilities created by the cloudy waters of our turbid* coastal environment.
If you’ve spent time at one of Barry’s beaches, you’ll know that the water is usually quite cloudy (almost opaque sometimes) and on this walk, Sindia Sosdian will discuss the coastal processes at play in these dynamic waters. We’ll explore the history, ecology and uses of the Severn Estuary, and observe together what thrives in turbid waters, whether honeycomb worms, humans or coral reefs.

Walk & Terrain
This walk will take place along Barry’s shoreline, between Watch House Bay and the Knapp. We’ll be meeting either side of low tide, with the spring tides* brought by the full moon. The walk will take us uphill to reach a viewpoint of the whole estuary and down the pebbles of the Knapp to the water’s edge. Comfortable shoes recommended and please dress for the weather. If you have any questions about this event, please email louise@sway-barry.org.
Sway
This walk is programmed by Sway, a new arts project in Barry which is hosting artists, researchers, writers and residents alongside the town’s hyper-tidal waters to explore ideas around attachments, entanglements, ways of holding, communing and collective-making across the local landscape.
*The Severn Estuary is highly turbid - the waters hold a large number of suspended particles which interfere with the passage of light through the water, making the water appear cloudy, or murky.
*Spring tides - when the Sun, Moon and Earth are in alignment (for example with a full moon) the gravitational forces bring the highest and lowest tides of the month.
